Clients Feedback - Fugitives Drift

Adrian (SA)
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, the company & the service & so did my two Australian guests who by the way were reduced to tears at one stage of Rob's very dramatic & thorough lecture on Rorkes Drift

Darryn (UK)
Fugitives Drift with David Ratray was outstanding!!!!!!!  He and Rob are probably some of the best orators I have ever heard...and I have listened in to a few battlefield tours.  My highlight and I now know so much more about Rorke's Drift and Isandlawana!

Cherie.  Was fantastic.  Would recommend to anyone interested in history. Thanks and warm regards Kas (USA)

Hi Cherie,
We had a grand time and everything was better than our wildest expectations. Thanks for all your work in arranging the visit.
George (USA)

Everything exceeded anything we expected. The accommodation in the cottage was super and we were thrilled to each have our own bedroom, except if I may suggest that at the steps going up to the two bedrooms that they install a handrail to steady one up and down those two big steps. Rob’s tours were wonderful and the energy and enthusiasm that he puts into them is quite superb.  Louise (SA)

Fugitives Drift Lodge - Battlefields accommodation Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana South Africa

Fugitives Drift Lodge - Location

Fugitives Drift Lodge is seeped in the history of bloody battles between the British and the Zulu.  Overlooking the Battlefield of Isandlwana, the 2,500 hectare reserve is 8km from Rorke’s Drift on the Buffalo River in KwaZulu Natal. 17km of river frontage include the famous site of Fugitives’ Drift, where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives in 1879 trying to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment, winning the first two posthumous Victoria Crosses in history.

Fugitives Drift - The Lodge

The Lodge, near Rorke’s Drift, is situated on the site of the original Rattray homestead where David’s parents came for their holidays and here the seeds of this unique operation took root in those early years. The Lodge is the original establishment, built by David and Nicky Rattray in 1989 and houses the majority of the memorabilia in the central lounge and dinning room area.  Spacious luxury en suite rooms each have a private veranda.  A feature of the Lodge is the beautiful shady well established garden, home to innumerable birds and the most spectacular large swimming pool situated on a secluded spur on the lip of the Buffalo River Gorge.

Fugitives Drift - The Guest House
The Guest House was once the home of Mr and Mrs Potgieter who were immortalised in Gillian Rattray’s award winning book “The Springing of the Year”.  This old farmhouse has been altered and is now the most charming sitting and dining room.  The original verandas have been retained and the outside eating area has a stunning view across a plain with Isandlwana in the distance. The rooms have
en-suite bedrooms that are tastefully decorated in a simple, ethnic style and all have private verandahs and sweeping views of the reserve.  The Guest House has a small swimming pool.
